Akande made this statement during the “My Take” segment of Channels Television’s Inside Sources on Sunday, criticizing the ongoing power struggle between Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Akande expressed concern over the escalating political tensions between Wike and Fubara, describing the clashes as detrimental to the stability of Rivers State. He noted that recent violence and destruction of public property in the state have been fueled by their conflict, which has caused public buildings to be destroyed and lives to be lost.

“The ongoing clash between Wike and Fubara is a disgrace to the people of Rivers State. Both leaders have failed to uplift the state, instead choosing to engage in a power struggle that is damaging the state’s progress,” Akande said. “It’s time for Wike to surrender and recognize that his time as governor is over.”

Akande, who has been a vocal advocate for better governance, urged Wike to heed his own advice, reminding him of his previous criticism of his predecessor when he accused them of pulling Rivers State down. “Wike must accept that he is no longer in charge of Rivers. He should take his own advice and stop trying to control the state from behind the scenes.”

Akande also offered advice to Governor Fubara, calling on him to adopt a more reconciliatory approach. He noted that Fubara should focus on uniting the various arms of the state government to improve service delivery and bring peace to Rivers. “Fubara must rise above the bickering and focus on governance. This dispute benefits no one, least of all the people of Rivers State.”

Akande further criticized the role of the Nigerian police in the escalating tensions, questioning their handling of the situation and their perceived allegiance to Wike. He expressed concern over reports that the police left local government offices unprotected, leading to their destruction shortly afterward.

“The police must do their job impartially. It’s troubling that public buildings are being torched after the police leave the scene. They should not be seen as doing Wike’s bidding,” Akande said.

He also suggested that the federal government’s tolerance of Wike’s behavior might be tied to his value in weakening the opposition, but warned that such actions are detrimental to democracy. “The government may be turning a blind eye because Wike is useful in neutralizing the opposition, but this kind of behavior only weakens our democratic process.”

Akande concluded his remarks with a pointed message to Wike, urging him to focus on his new responsibilities in the FCT. “Wike cannot govern two places at once. The FCT has enough challenges that need attention. It’s time for him to leave Rivers alone and focus on his job in Abuja.”

Former presidential aide Laolu Akande has called on Nyesom Wike, the immediate past Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to step back from meddling in Rivers State politics and focus on his new role.
