Maryamu Idris, Executive Director of Crude & Condensate at NNPC Trading Limited, provided insights during a panel presentation at the Argus European Crude Conference in London.

Idris highlighted the substantial impact of the conflict, noting a decline in demand from the Asian market, particularly India, traditionally a significant destination for Nigerian crude. The conflict triggered an increased appetite for discounted Russian barrels by India, leading to a reduction in Nigerian crude exports to the country from approximately 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) before the invasion to 120,000 bpd in the current year.

Contrastingly, Nigerian crude flows to Europe have surged as the continent seeks to fill supply gaps left by the ban on Russian crude. Idris revealed that the trend has made Nigerian grades a substantial component in the post-war palette of European refiners. Notable Nigerian distillate-rich grades, including Forcados Blend, Escravos Light, Bonga, Egina, and the recently introduced Nembe Crude, have become preferred choices for European refiners.

Addressing production challenges, Idris acknowledged the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, reduced upstream investment, supply chain disruptions, aging oil fields, and oil theft. However, she expressed optimism as these challenges are being addressed through the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) of 2021, rejuvenating the business landscape and positioning NNPC Limited for a more commercial approach to managing Nigeria’s hydrocarbon resources.

Idris highlighted NNPC Limited’s efforts in securing partnerships with notable financial institutions to promote upstream investments, restoring and sustainably growing production capacity. She emphasized concerted efforts, in collaboration with host communities and private stakeholders, to address security and environmental challenges in the Niger Delta, leading to significant progress.

In September 2023, Nigeria recorded its highest crude oil and condensate output in nearly two years, reaching 1.72 million barrels per day, signaling the beginning of a production rebound. In addition to growing upstream production volumes, NNPC Limited is actively increasing its participation in the downstream sector through the restructured NNPC Trading Company, adopting a ‘wells-to-wheels’ approach to bring the country’s hydrocarbon molecules closer to end-users in the global market for crude, condensate, gas, and petroleum products.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) sheds light on the repercussions of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict on Nigerian crude oil inflows in the international market, emphasizing shifts in demand patterns and the influence on global energy prices.
