The 13 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors are set to convene today to address the escalating internal crisis within the party, following the emergence of a factional National Chairman, Alhaji Yayari Mohammed. The crisis deepened last week after a move was initiated to replace the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, which has caused a sharp divide within the party.<\/p>\n

Sources report that Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors\u2019 Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, is leading a group of six governors in support of Damagum\u2019s ouster, while other governors, including Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, back Damagum, an ally of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.<\/p>\n

A source familiar with the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the primary agenda of today’s meeting is to explore the possibility of reconciling the two factions \u2014 Damagum\u2019s camp and the faction led by Yayari Mohammed.<\/p>\n

“The governors will review actions taken by both factions, with an emphasis on the recent suspensions and leadership decisions. They will debate whether to uphold or reverse those decisions, possibly leading to a vote,” the source said. “This decision will have a significant impact on the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for October 24.”<\/p>\n

The source further explained that today’s discussions will determine which faction will chair the NEC meeting and the direction of the party moving forward. Both sides have substantial stakes in the leadership contest, and the governors are expected to engage in a deep dialogue to reach a consensus.<\/p>\n

“There\u2019s also a split among the governors. While Bala Mohammed and others are against Damagum, Makinde, Fintiri, and Mutfwang are leading the pro-Damagum group,” the insider added. “Despite their differences, the meeting is aimed at brokering peace and finding a way to maintain unity within the party.”<\/p>\n

Another senior party official noted that the governors are committed to reducing tensions within the PDP and developing a framework that accommodates the interests of both factions.<\/p>\n
