Ahmed Yayari Mohammed, the factional acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has officially assumed his role as leader of the party amid ongoing internal divisions. Yayari was appointed by a faction opposing the current leadership of Illiya Damagum, following recent defections and disagreements within the party.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued on Sunday, Yayari expressed disappointment in the party’s failure to fulfill its role as the main opposition in Nigerian politics. He pledged that under his leadership, the new National Working Committee (NWC) would operate within the framework of the PDP\u2019s constitution and the rule of law, while ensuring fairness to all members.<\/p>\n
“The NWC under my leadership will be guided strictly by the Constitution of our Party,” Yayari affirmed. “I will at all times be fair to all members irrespective of their status, position, or state in the Party. Only this will guarantee and engender loyalty and commitment of our teeming members.”<\/p>\n
In a bid to restore stability and confidence among party members, Yayari outlined his immediate goal of convening the long-overdue National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. He announced that the NEC meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2024, and that preparations are already underway to ensure its success.<\/p>\n
“My primary goal, focus, and mandate in this onerous assignment is to restore the confidence of our members by immediately setting in motion the process to hold the long overdue NEC meeting,” he stated.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Yayari highlighted the constitutional requirement for the North Central Zone to nominate a replacement for former National Chairman Senator Iyorchia Ayu, whose tenure remains incomplete. He called on the North Central Zone to urgently meet and present a nominee for consideration by the NEC.<\/p>\n
“In line with the provision of our Party\u2019s Constitution, the North Central Zone, which is constitutionally entitled to produce a replacement to serve out the tenure of the former National Chairman, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, is hereby requested to urgently meet and forward its nominee to my office for necessary preparation and forwarding for consideration and approval by NEC at the October 24, 2024 meeting,” he declared.<\/p>\n
Yayari’s leadership comes at a time when the PDP is grappling with internal strife, defections, and calls for reforms. He acknowledged that the party had failed to meet the expectations of its members and supporters but promised that his tenure would mark the beginning of a new chapter focused on unity and accountability.<\/p>\n
Observers believe that Yayari\u2019s call for an NEC meeting could be an attempt to consolidate his position and gain broader support within the party.
