This partnership aims to transform Zamfara into a hub for solid minerals, with potential benefits for both the state and the nation’s economy.

In a statement issued by Segun Tomori, Special Assistant on Media to the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, it was agreed that collaborative efforts between the federal and state governments are critical to unlocking the economic potential of Zamfara’s abundant mineral resources. The statement was released following a meeting between the minister and Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, in Abuja on Friday.

During the meeting, Dr. Alake stressed the strategic importance of Zamfara to Nigeria’s mining sector and the urgent need to remove obstacles that hinder mining activities in the region. “Zamfara is one of Nigeria’s most resource-rich states, particularly in solid minerals. It is essential for all levels of government to collaborate in responsibly exploiting these resources and ensuring that the revenue benefits both Zamfara citizens and Nigerians as a whole,” Dr. Alake said.

The minister further emphasized that the MSMD is committed to creating an enabling environment for mining activities in Zamfara, including addressing security challenges that have plagued the region. Dr. Alake acknowledged that the state’s mining sector has been stifled by issues such as banditry and illegal mining operations, but reassured that the government is taking decisive steps to rectify these issues.

Governor Dauda Lawal, in his remarks, reiterated the importance of federal-state collaboration in overcoming the challenges facing Zamfara’s mining industry. He stated that his visit was part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two levels of government, particularly in addressing security concerns and laying the groundwork for sustainable mining development.

“We discussed security concerns and strategies to better utilize our mineral resources for the benefit of both Zamfara and the nation. We need to explore the necessary infrastructure to attract investors to solid minerals, which can contribute significantly to our state’s economy,” Governor Lawal said. He also expressed optimism that with proper infrastructure, the state could attract both local and international investors to revitalize its mining sector.

The federal government has already made strides toward improving the mining environment in Zamfara. Notably, recent security operations in the state have led to the elimination of several bandit leaders, creating a safer climate for investment. These efforts are part of a broader federal strategy to secure mining communities and promote responsible mining practices, ensuring that local communities benefit from the wealth generated by mineral extraction.

Looking ahead, the partnership between the MSMD and the Zamfara State Government is expected to focus on improving regulatory frameworks, establishing new mining infrastructure, and ensuring that mining activities are carried out sustainably. Both parties have pledged to ensure that revenues from mining contribute to local development, improve the livelihoods of citizens, and support the federal government’s economic diversification agenda.

Dr. Alake concluded by expressing the federal government’s optimism about the future of solid mineral development in Zamfara, stating that with the right policies and partnerships, the state could become a major contributor to Nigeria’s non-oil revenue streams. “We are confident that through collaboration, security enhancement, and infrastructure development, Zamfara will emerge as a key player in Nigeria’s solid minerals industry,” he said.

This partnership signals a renewed commitment to realizing the untapped potential of Zamfara’s mineral wealth, which includes valuable resources such as gold, lead, and zinc. With the ongoing reforms in the mining sector, the state is poised to become an economic powerhouse, driving job creation, increasing government revenue, and boosting Nigeria’s overall economic growth.

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development (MSMD), has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Zamfara State Government to harness the state’s vast mineral resources for economic development.
