Senator Oluremi Tinubu, wife of President Bola Tinubu, has stated that her husband should not be blamed for Nigeria’s current economic challenges. Since the removal of the fuel subsidy, which increased petrol prices from N198 to N1,030, Nigerians have been grappling with economic hardship.<\/p>\n

During a visit to the Palace of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, on Thursday, the First Lady defended the administration, noting that it is still in its early stages. “We are just two years into our administration, we are not the cause of the current situation, we are trying to fix it and secure the future,” she said.<\/p>\n

President Tinubu announced the end of the subsidy during his inauguration on May 29, 2023, explaining that it had hindered Nigeria’s progress. While acknowledging the challenges that followed, Mrs. Tinubu expressed optimism: “With God on our side, in the next two years, Nigeria will be greater than this. Those who attempted removing subsidy before could not see it through. But with your prayers, we will build a nation for the future.”<\/p>\n

The First Lady emphasized that her husband is not driven by greed, thanking God for their position in Nigeria. “We give glory to God for our status, myself and my husband, we are not greedy. It is not common for rich people to get to this seat but I am grateful to God. We cannot disappoint Nigeria, and with the help of God, we are getting to the promised land in no distant time,” she added.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Tinubu was in Ile Ife to inaugurate a hostel and a 2.7-kilometer road donated by the Ooni of Ife to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and named in her honor. She also announced a donation of N1 billion to OAU for its development.<\/p>\n

The Ooni of Ife praised the First Lady\u2019s legacy, particularly her “New Era Initiative” during her time as First Lady of Lagos State, which inspired young people to aspire for leadership roles, calling her a role model for the nation’s youth.<\/p>\n
