In a statement released on Friday by the Acting General Manager of the Kwara State Social Investment Programmes (KWASSIP), Dr. Abdulwasiu Olayinka Tejidini, the initiative was taken to prevent job losses and the collapse of businesses affected by the exercise.

The event was attended by key government officials, including the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Geographic Information Service (KwarGIS), ESV Abdulkareem Babatunde Suleiman; Director of Physical Planning, TPL Abdulhakeem Abdulsalam; Executive Secretary of KWASSIP, Mrs. Roseline Ajanaku; and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Communications, Ibraheem Abdullateef.

Dr. Tejidini explained that beneficiaries were selected after a thorough assessment of their losses. “Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in his kindheartedness approved support for the affected business owners to grant them relief and help raise their businesses after the incident,” Tejidini stated. He added that ten beneficiaries would receive N801,550 each, two would receive N572,000, and forty-nine others would be awarded N400,000 each. The support will go to businesses impacted in areas such as Post Office, Tanke, and Ahmadu Bello Way.

ESV Abdulkareem Suleiman, the Executive Chairman of KwarGIS, highlighted that while the enforcement of the setback was legal, with occupants holding Certificates of Temporary Occupation (CTO) that can be revoked with seven days’ notice, the financial support was not a legal obligation but rather an act of generosity. “Kwara State Government is not liable to offer any compensation… What is being done today is out of magnanimity of the Governor and it is very commendable,” he noted.

Mrs. Mary Ogbona, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude for the unexpected support. “I am very happy for this help. We didn’t expect it. We thank Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his act of magnanimity. This money will help us settle down back to business quicker and better,” she said.

The Kwara State Government has approved financial relief for 82 business owners impacted by the enforcement of road setbacks in the capital.
