A suspected cholera outbreak in Kanye Village, Kabo local government area of Kano State, has claimed seven lives and hospitalized a dozen others. The outbreak is believed to have been triggered by contaminated water from an open well, the community’s sole source of drinking water. Heavy rains caused a nearby pond to overflow, polluting the well, and villagers soon noticed that those who consumed the water fell ill.<\/p>\n
Hafiz Ali Baba, the chief sanitation officer in the area, confirmed the outbreak and warned residents to stop using the well. Upon arriving at the village, Baba reported that four people had already died and been buried, while many others were sick. Authorities ordered that all sick individuals receive medical attention at the hospital.<\/p>\n
Cholera outbreaks have become a recurring issue in Kano, particularly after flooding events. According to the state’s Ministry of Health, heavy downpours flood and contaminate water sources, leading to these outbreaks. However, the ministry has assured that the wells have been disinfected.<\/p>\n
This is not the first time Kano State has experienced a devastating cholera outbreak. In 2021, Nigeria faced its worst cholera outbreak in a decade, with over 90,000 people infected. M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (MSF) emergency teams worked alongside the Nigerian Ministry of Health to bring the outbreak under control.<\/p>\n
