Citing a report from the Nigerian Medical Association, he noted that the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital in Ondo now employs only 22 resident doctors, a drastic drop from 150 in previous years. This alarming trend underscores a growing crisis in the state’s healthcare system, as the absence of specialized resident doctors in critical areas such as orthopaedics, mental health, and paediatric surgery further exacerbates the situation.

“The state General Hospitals in Iwaro-Oka, Ipe, Irele, and Idoani, which previously boasted at least five doctors each, are now left with a solitary doctor who is on call throughout the week and manages daily operations,” the statement emphasized, reflecting the dire reality faced by patients in need of medical attention.

The PDP also expressed concern over a recent recruitment drive for healthcare personnel, which was reportedly boycotted by doctors due to inadequate salaries. They pointed out that the starting salary for doctors in Ondo is Grade Level 12 Step 3, in stark contrast to the Federal Government’s approved rate of Grade Level 13 Step 2 adopted by other states. This pay disparity has led to an exodus of healthcare professionals seeking better opportunities in neighboring states like Ekiti, Oyo, Lagos, and Kwara, despite Ondo’s comparatively stronger financial position.

“Doctors in Ondo are leaving for states that offer better working conditions, which is troubling considering our state’s resources,” Peretei remarked, emphasizing the urgent need for reforms to retain medical personnel.

In response to the PDP’s allegations, the Lucky Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation Foot Soldiers, a pro-APC group, dismissed the claims as unfounded and politically motivated. Their Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Kayode Fasua, stated that Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration has made significant strides in improving the health sector. “The PDP is fabricating lies against Governor Aiyedatiwa, who has received commendations for his exceptional performance in healthcare,” Fasua asserted.

The APC group further contended that the current shortage of doctors is not unique to Ondo State, but rather part of a broader national issue affecting many regions across the country. They highlighted that numerous states are grappling with similar challenges, thus dismissing the PDP’s assertions as an attempt to politicize a systemic problem.

The Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sharply criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the deteriorating condition of public hospitals in the state, blaming the current administration for neglecting the health sector.
