His remarks came in the wake of the tensions surrounding the Rivers State Local Government Area elections, which were held on Saturday despite significant opposition and challenges.

In an interview with Soar TV, Okonkwo praised the leadership of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for ensuring that the elections took place against the odds. He commended Fubara for standing up for the rights of the people, even in the face of the Nigeria Police Force’s withdrawal and opposition from supporters of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Okonkwo emphasized that politicians like Fubara, who resist and fight when their rights and the rights of the people are infringed upon, are essential for strengthening Nigeria’s democracy. He criticized those unwilling to take the risks associated with political office, asserting that leadership requires a willingness to confront challenges head-on.

“If you’re not willing to take the risks attached to any profession, step aside so that people with the courage from God will go ahead and serve in that capacity,” Okonkwo stated. “If you’re a politician and can’t stand for the people who voted for you, because you don’t want to die, step aside. That’s what the job entails.”

Okonkwo further argued that politicians who fail to stand firm for their constituents, especially in light of a judicial and electoral system that he believes has let the people down, are unworthy of public support. He praised Fubara for his determination, noting that the governor’s resolve ensured that the Rivers State elections proceeded despite opposition.

“If Sim Fubara had been hesitant or passive, Rivers State would have been in a different situation,” Okonkwo remarked. “He was prepared for the fight. He said the election must go on, winners must be declared, and they will be sworn in, no matter the consequences.”

Okonkwo also emphasized the importance of having leaders who are not afraid to defend their electoral mandates. He called for more politicians to adopt Fubara’s fearless approach, particularly when elections are threatened by manipulation or violence.

“I’m looking for leaders who would say, ‘Nobody will rig my election, and if you try, I will fight, and let’s see who comes out on top,'” Okonkwo added, expressing his hope for a future where more politicians are willing to take bold stands for the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.

Labour Party leader and former campaign spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, has called on politicians who are unwilling to defend the rights of their voters due to fear of personal harm to resign.
