Waidi Oloyede, the Nigeria Union of Pensioners’ Ogun State Chairman, has beseeched Governor Dapo Abiodun to assist in introducing what he called “health relief” under the National Health Insurance program, so that retirees who sign up for the plan will receive a 50% discount.<\/p>\n
Oloyede claimed that a request of this nature from the pensioners will lessen the load on numerous retirees who are dealing with various illnesses brought on by aging and other circumstances.<\/p>\n
Additionally, the NUP Chairman pleaded with the governor to address the state’s subsequent pension modifications.<\/p>\n
While the mainstream workforce has benefited from pay increases since 2020 and an additional 40% unique allowance since August of last year, he added that pensioners have continued to receive the same amount despite the financial difficulty brought on by the elimination of subsidies.<\/p>\n
Oloyede disclosed this on Saturday during the annual celebration of the Pensioners\u2019 Day held at the state secretariat of the pensioners at Leme, Abeokuta.<\/span><\/p>\n He said, \u201cThe long-awaited but seemingly elusive consequential increase in pensions has greatly agitated the minds of the senior citizens whose monthly \u201ctake home\u201d cannot take them to bank talk less of taking them back home.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe paltry sum is grossly inappropriate to purchase drugs for various health challenges nor meet the demands of the present-day economic realities. We would definitely be happy if Your Excellency could help with the implementation of this consequential adjustment to ease the pains of the economically battered senior citizens.<\/p>\n \u201cWe also wish to inform you that most, if not all, the senior citizens battle one health challenge or the other. It is therefore pertinent to say that we, the aged, the senior citizens, mostly need health relief as it is provided by the National Health Insurance Scheme.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe passionately plead that the pensioners be rightly captured on the National Health Insurance Scheme and a further rebate or discount of 50% benefit should accrue to would-be subscribers as such has been allowed the mainstream personnel, the active workforce\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n He also pleaded for the inclusion of pensioners alongside other labour unions in the negotiation forum for the new minimum wage, saying that this would also help to make informed contributions that could enhance the economic value of the retirees\u2019 earnings.<\/span><\/p>\n Oloyede has, nevertheless, praised Abiodun for taking on the problem of the backlog of owed pensions head-on by releasing N500 million on a quarterly basis.<\/p>\n This amount was eventually raised to N2 billion, and N5.3 billion was released as a cap.
