Calls for Damagum’s removal have intensified, further fracturing party unity.

Tensions have particularly flared between PDP governors and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, linked to the ongoing crisis in Rivers State. The situation escalated when the PDP National Working Committee, under Damagum’s leadership, transferred control of the Rivers PDP structure to Wike instead of the sitting Governor Siminalayi Fubara, prompting opposition from the PDP Governors’ Forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.

In response to these internal issues, the PDP National Working Committee established both the Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committees on August 21, chaired by former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Ikimi, respectively.

Showunmi emphasized the committee’s intention to foster dialogue, stating, “We will commence work on October 7, starting at the zonal level. In each zone, the party chairmen, zonal secretaries, and those with grievances will meet with us to resolve the issues.” He noted that while outreach to Wike and other stakeholders will occur, the roles of the Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committees are distinct.

“The role of reconciliation is to appeal to everyone, while the Disciplinary Committee deals with those who have gone too far and applies consequences. Our job is to ask for peace and understanding,” he explained.

An anonymous member of the Disciplinary Committee reported a cautious approach, noting, “Not much progress has been made in the Disciplinary Committee yet. Some of us met with the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and other members of the National Working Committee to discuss our approach.” The source stressed the need for caution to prevent exacerbating the crisis, indicating that further meetings will follow to refine the committee’s strategy.

The National Reconciliation Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to commence its efforts on October 7, engaging with party stakeholders at the zonal level to address ongoing internal conflicts. A member of the committee, Segun Showunmi, who aimed to be the PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State in 2023, along with […]

[186

post-50681","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics
["GET
