The Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) has taken the top spot in the 2024 National Freedom of Information (FOI) compliance ranking, surpassing 245 other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). This achievement was announced by a coalition of organizations, including Accountability Lab Nigeria, Public and Private Development Center, and Media Rights Agenda, in Abuja.<\/p>\n
According to James Emmanuel, data analyst for the International Center for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), the MDAs were evaluated based on their proactiveness, disclosure levels, and responsiveness to FOI requests. Unfortunately, only 1.22% of the MDAs were fully proactive, while 91.84% were non-proactive.<\/p>\n
The assessment revealed that 9.39% of MDAs fully disclosed requested information, while 84.9% failed to disclose any information. The evaluation was based on three key parameters: proactive disclosure, responsiveness to information requests, and the level of disclosure, with a total of 100 points available.<\/p>\n
Victoria Etim, program officer of Right2Know (R2K) Nigeria, highlighted the challenges faced during the assessment, particularly the inactive websites of some MDAs. Lucy Abagi, CEO of the Public and Private Development Center (PDC), emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in governance, urging public institutions to voluntarily release relevant information and provide timely access to public data.<\/p>\n
