Four men are facing criminal charges in connection with the theft of a gold toilet valued at £4.8 million, which disappeared from Blenheim Palace during an overnight heist in September 2019.

The stolen piece, named “America,” was part of an art exhibition by Italian conceptual artist Maurizio Cattelan. The Crown Prosecution Service has announced the authorization of charges against the four suspects, who are scheduled to appear at Oxford magistrates court on November 28.

The golden toilet, which had a three-minute usage limit to prevent long queues, was on display for just two days before it was stolen. Its removal caused flooding and damage to the 18th-century stately home and UNESCO world heritage site in Woodstock, as it had been plumbed in at the time.

This distinctive toilet had previously been exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, where it drew significant attention. It was later moved to Blenheim Palace as part of Cattelan’s solo UK show.

Speaking about the theft, Cattelan expressed his hope that it was merely a prank, questioning the motivation behind stealing a toilet that symbolized the “American dream” for the 1%.

Blenheim Palace, the ancestral seat of the Duke of Marlborough, had initially downplayed the risk of theft due to the toilet’s plumbing and the anonymity of its users.

Dominic Hare, the CEO of Blenheim Palace, commented on the irony of an artwork portraying the American dream being stolen and hidden from view, rendering it inaccessible to all.

The individuals facing charges are James Sheen, 39, from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, who faces charges of burglary, conspiracy to transfer criminal property, and transferring criminal property. Michael Jones, 38, from Oxford, has been charged with burglary, while Fred Doe, 35, from Ascot, Berkshire, and Bora Guccuk, 39, from West London, have each been charged with conspiracy to transfer criminal property.

Senior Crown Prosecutor Shan Saunders emphasized the importance of fair trial rights for the accused and requested that no prejudicial information be shared online or in the media.
