On Sunday, Donald Trump used a speech in important swing state Pennsylvania to call for a “violent” police crackdown on crime in the United States, while his White House competitor Kamala Harris underlined the need for immigration reform at a Nevada rally.<\/p>\n
Pennsylvania is seen as the most critical of the seven toss-up states that will most likely determine the presidential election on November 5, but Nevada is also a key battlefield.<\/p>\n
The Republican former president and current contender, who spoke at a similar rally in swing state Wisconsin on Saturday, repeated his gloomy, racially charged rhetoric about an America disintegrating under “invasion” by violent migrants and criminals.<\/p>\n
Recounting isolated \u2014 but widely publicized \u2014 incidents of thieves staging brazen daylight robberies of shops in major cities, Trump got a loud cheer when he said police should become \u201cextraordinarily rough.\u201d<\/p>\n
Criminals, he said, \u201chave to be taught\u201d and this could be done \u201cif you had one really violent day.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOne rough hour \u2014 and I mean real rough \u2014 the word would get out and it would end immediately,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe police aren\u2019t allowed to do their job\u201d because \u201cthe liberal left won\u2019t let them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Harris, the vice president and Democratic candidate, addressed the \u201cserious problems\u201d of border security at a rally in Las Vegas later in the day, where she reeled off her usual stump speech, emphasizing the economy, health care and the need for immigration reform.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs president, I will double the resources for the Department of Justice to go after the transnational cartels,\u201d Harris said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know Donald Trump won\u2019t solve them. When he was president, he did nothing to fix our immigration system,\u201d she added, calling for comprehensive reform but without offering details.<\/p>\n
As on Saturday in Wisconsin, Trump spent much of his speech painting a picture of a failing United States, inundated by what he said was the \u201cmassive number of savage criminal aliens that Kamala Harris has allowed to invade.\u201d<\/p>\n
He claimed \u201cterrorists are pouring into our country\u201d and cited \u201ca big prison in the Congo, in Africa,\u201d as the source of \u201ca lot of people\u201d last week.<\/p>\n
\u2013 Insults \u2013<\/p>\n
Anti-immigrant sentiment has been key to Trump’s support in economically disadvantaged, majority-white areas of the country since his 2016 presidential victory, but the rhetoric is becoming increasingly severe as election day approaches.<\/p>\n
Following record levels of illegal border crossings earlier in President Joe Biden’s administration, a tightening of laws \u2014 much to the dismay of immigrant rights and civil liberties groups \u2014 resulted in a drop in numbers this year.<\/p>\n
According to the FBI, crime, including murder, is declining dramatically across the country.
\nTrump has long taken satisfaction in his ability to develop derogatory nicknames or slurs for his opponents, and on Sunday, he reiterated one he aired on Saturday, labeling Harris, a former top California prosecutor and US senator, as “mentally impaired.”<\/p>\n
\u201cCrooked Joe Biden became mentally impaired. Sad. But lying Kamala Harris, honestly, I believe she was born that way,\u201d Trump said to loud laughter from the crowd.<\/p>\n
Harris did not address Trump\u2019s comments during her rally in Vegas, instead focusing on her usual bread-and-butter issues \u2014 protecting access to abortion services and putting more money in the pockets of everyday Americans.<\/p>\n
