The Coalition of Opposition Lawmakers in Nigeria has sharply criticized the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for his recent remarks against his successor, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. In a strong statement, the coalition urged Wike to stop “daydreaming,” asserting that Governor Fubara would never abandon the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for Wike, who has aligned himself with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).<\/p>\n
Wike reportedly mocked Governor Fubara and his camp for considering the Action People’s Party (APP) as an alternative platform for the upcoming local elections in Rivers State, vowing to teach them “how to play politics.” The former governor implied that Fubara had lost his grip on the PDP and was seeking refuge in a smaller political party.<\/p>\n
However, in a swift rebuttal, the Coalition of Opposition Lawmakers, through its spokesperson Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, dismissed Wike’s comments, describing them as delusional. Ugochinyere stated that Fubara has no intention of leaving the PDP and will remain firmly in control of the party\u2019s affairs in Rivers State, even as Wike works against his former political home from within the APC.<\/p>\n
“Who told the FCT Minister that Governor Fubara would ever leave PDP for him to control while he continues to work for the APC?” Ugochinyere asked rhetorically. He went further to label Wike’s assertion that Fubara has defected to APP as “a lie and a desperate attempt from a politician who is clearly out of touch with reality.”<\/p>\n
The opposition spokesperson described Wike as panicking, comparing him to “an amateur politician running from one court to another” in an effort to secure control of the Rivers PDP. Ugochinyere issued a stern warning to the minister, saying, “Put your seatbelt on for the political storm ahead. Thinking that Fubara will leave PDP and join APP shows you\u2019re an overrated politician. Wait for the real battle. Fubara has outsmarted you at every turn.”<\/p>\n
He continued, emphasizing that Wike\u2019s belief in being able to lead the PDP while being a member of the APC was not only irrational but also a sign of his desperation. “Governor Fubara will deliver an uppercut to you in the battle for the soul of PDP. You cannot stay in the APC and control the PDP. Rivers PDP is secure under Fubara\u2019s leadership, and you, Wike, have no control over it.”<\/p>\n
Ugochinyere also addressed Wike’s claims regarding the local government elections, where some PDP members have opted to contest under the APP platform. He clarified that this was a strategic move by certain PDP members but not an indication of Fubara abandoning the party. “Wike thought he could destroy local government administration in Rivers State, but Governor Fubara has stabilized the system, much to Wike’s frustration.”<\/p>\n
The statement further emphasized that the PDP executives being paraded by Wike are “an illegal committee of friends,” asserting that their legitimacy had already been voided by the courts. “As of today, the valid Rivers PDP is with Fubara.
