The Borno State government committee tasked with distributing relief packages to Maiduguri flood victims is unhappy about the House of Representatives rejecting the N300 billion federal special intervention grant proposal. According to Prof. Ibrahim Umara, co-chairman of the committee, the flood’s destruction exceeds trillions of naira, dwarfing the proposed N300 billion support.<\/p>\n
Umara expressed frustration with bloggers and “political jingoists” exaggerating donor pledges, creating unrealistic expectations and instigating victims against the government. He emphasized that the N7 billion received from donors is insufficient to address the needs of hundreds of thousands of victims.<\/p>\n
The committee assessed the damage in various communities, including Galtimari, Kauri, Shehuri, Gamboru, and Bulabulin, and found widespread destruction. Umara urged bloggers to visit Maiduguri to understand the situation firsthand, rather than spreading misinformation.<\/p>\n
This development comes after the Alau Dam collapse, which was blamed on years of neglect and mismanagement of funds.
