Enugu State has dropped to the bottom of the list in terms of ease of doing business in Nigeria, ranking 36th out of 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, according to the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council’s (PEBEC) annual report. This represents a significant decline from its 27th position in 2021.<\/p>\n
In contrast, Abia State has made impressive strides, jumping 12 places to 21st, making it the top state in the southeast for ease of doing business. Anambra State maintained its 7th position, while Imo State slipped two spots to 13th. Ebonyi State also fell, dropping nine places to 32nd.<\/p>\n
The report evaluated various economic and social indices, including capital importation, infant mortality, poverty rate, out-of-school children, total public debt, and formal enterprises. Enugu’s poor performance was attributed to factors such as a total public debt exceeding N146 billion, unpaid pensions to retired workers, over 70,000 out-of-school children, and a mere 26,000 formal enterprises.<\/p>\n
The Subnational Ease of Doing Business Report aims to provide valuable insights into the business climate of Nigerian states, serving as a reliable resource for investors and businesses. The 2023 report builds upon the inaugural 2021 report, enhancing methodology and statistical significance.<\/p>\n
The report’s release coincided with an open letter from Chijioke Edeoga, the Labour Party’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate, criticizing Governor Peter Mbah’s tax regime for harming the state’s economy.
