Former President Goodluck Jonathan has once again denied allegations that $49 billion in oil revenue went missing during his tenure. He made these comments at the launch of “Public Policy and Agents, Interests Perspectives from the emerging world,” a book co-authored by Dr. Shamshudeen Usman, a former finance minister who served under Jonathan.<\/p>\n
Jonathan took issue with claims made by Muhammad Sanusi II, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and current Emir of Kano, who contributed to the book. Sanusi alleged that Jonathan sacked him due to his investigation into the missing funds. However, Jonathan clarified that Sanusi was suspended, not sacked.<\/p>\n
Jonathan emphasized the impossibility of stealing such a large amount from Nigeria’s treasury, especially considering the country’s $32 billion budget at the time. He recounted being confronted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel over the issue and explaining that the claims were unfounded.<\/p>\n
Jonathan also highlighted inconsistencies in Sanusi’s narrative, which initially claimed $49 billion was missing, then $20 billion, and eventually $12 billion. He pointed out that investigations by PriceWaterHouseCoopers (PWC) and the Senate Committee on Finance found no evidence to support the claims. Instead, PWC discovered that $1.48 billion was unaccounted for by the NNPC.<\/p>\n
This isn’t the first time Jonathan has faced criticism over financial management during his presidency. His administration was plagued by corruption allegations, including a reported $20 billion NNPC scandal.
