This development comes in line with the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

In a statement released on Wednesday by Caroline Embu, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for the NYSC, the increment was confirmed following a formal communication from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission. The letter, dated September 25, 2024, was signed by the Commission’s Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta, detailing the new remuneration structure for Corps members.

The recent adjustment follows advocacy efforts led by the Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General YD Ahmed. During a visit to the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Brigadier General Ahmed made a strong case for the need to improve the welfare package for Corps members, stressing the importance of supporting them during their service year, particularly in the face of rising living costs.

Prior to the new increment, Corps members had been receiving a monthly allowance of Thirty-Three Thousand Naira (N33,000), which was last adjusted in 2019 following the enactment of the previous minimum wage law. The recent rise to N77,000 marks a notable step by the Federal Government in acknowledging the challenges faced by young graduates during their service year and reflects the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of youth in the country.

This development is seen as a welcome relief for Corps members, who have long expressed concerns over the adequacy of their monthly stipends to cover basic living expenses. The increased allowance is expected to help alleviate some of the financial burdens faced by the over 350,000 Nigerian graduates participating in the mandatory one-year service to their nation annually.

The NYSC, established in 1973, remains a vital institution in fostering national unity, civic responsibility, and social integration among Nigerian youths. This increment further strengthens the government’s recognition of the sacrifices made by Corps members, who are often deployed to remote areas where access to basic amenities can be challenging.

In the statement, Ms. Embu emphasized that the new allowance will take effect immediately, starting from July 2024, ensuring that all Corps members currently serving or those yet to be mobilized will benefit from the enhanced welfare package.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a significant increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, raising it to Seventy-Seven Thousand Naira (N77,000) from July 2024.
