{"id":49779,"date":"2024-09-25T10:28:31","date_gmt":"2024-09-25T10:28:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=49779"},"modified":"2024-09-25T10:28:31","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T10:28:31","slug":"vio-impounded-9389-vehicles-in-8-months-in-abuja-official","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/09\/25\/vio-impounded-9389-vehicles-in-8-months-in-abuja-official\/","title":{"rendered":"VIO Impounded 9,389 Vehicles in 8 Months in Abuja \u2013 Official"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Directorate of Road Traffic Services, DRTS, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, says it has impounded 9,389 vehicles for various traffic offenses in the last eight months.<\/p>\n<p>The Head, Public Relations and Enlightenment of the service, Kalu Emetu, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Emetu said that whenever such vehicles were impounded, the offending drivers were usually sent to the directorate\u2019s model drivers\u2019 institute in Lugbe for correction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, apart from paying fines which is a revenue generation to the government, they are made not to have control of the vehicles until they fulfill the stipulated conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd often times, they are subjected to psychometric test, and in a worst scenario, they are made to even go for psychoanalysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is to prove whether or not the driver is still fit to be on the road,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Emetu said that the officers of the directorate might even be stricter by outrightly withdrawing the license of a driver who has proven to be a danger to other road users.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, this is usually the case when the driver has been subjected to all the necessary tests and found to be on the wrong side.<\/p>\n<p>He said that all these efforts were geared towards ensuring that carnage on FCT roads were reduced to the barest minimum.<\/p>\n<p>On the problem posed by rickety vehicles, he said that the DRTS had subjected a total of 19,929 vehicles to test.<\/p>\n<p>He said that this was in its effort to reduce the number of vehicles that are not roadworthy in the FCT,<\/p>\n<p>He said that out of the 19,929, 9,234 passed the roadworthy test, representing about 47 per cent, while 10,792 were sent back for further maintenance services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll these exercise took place between January and August and represents a remarkable improvement compared to what it used to be in the past<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason for this improvement is the strategic increase in enforcement activities which has made more vehicle owners to patronise the inspection centres,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the inspection centres were located in different parts of the city for easy access by drivers, adding that road worthy vehicles go a long way to reducing road crashes.<br \/>\nNAN<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Directorate of Road Traffic Services, DRTS, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, says it has impounded 9,389 vehicles for various traffic offenses in the last eight months.
