This demand was made in a protest letter authored by BRGIE’s attorney, Jonathan Levy, which was made available to the public on Tuesday.

The pro-Biafra group accused Idowu-Ojo of being biased against their petition for Biafran self-rule, alleging that the Commission has ignored the claims of marginalization and human rights violations against Biafrans. BRGIE claimed that despite their attempts to present their case before the ACHPR, Idowu-Ojo, a Nigerian citizen, summarily dismissed their communication without consideration.

Levy, in the letter, stated, “Before the Commission could meet and consider the BRGIE communication, the Executive Secretary, a Nigerian citizen and lawyer educated in Nigeria, summarily dismissed the communication on the grounds it did not state a case or contain any facts.”

The group further alleged that the ACHPR procedural rules, which require the Executive Secretary to explain her position and give BRGIE the opportunity to amend their communication, were disregarded. According to Levy, two additional requests for clarification went unanswered.

BRGIE argues that Idowu-Ojo’s Nigerian background compromises her impartiality. “A Nigerian citizen and product of the biased Nigerian educational system, including its elite universities, cannot comprehend the plight of Biafra or its people, as they have been instructed from an early age that Biafra is never to be mentioned or acknowledged,” Levy added.

The group also urged the African Union (AU) to avoid repeating what they described as the anti-Biafra stance of its predecessor, the Organization of African Unity (OAU), which opposed Biafran independence during the 1967-1970 civil war.

BRGIE’s letter highlighted the atrocities of the Biafran War, claiming the genocide of that period must never be repeated. The group warned that if the AU fails to address their concerns, it risks becoming irrelevant. “If the African Union refuses to take up the challenge, that organization must be relegated to the garbage pail of history as a relic of neo-colonialism,” Levy stated.

Despite the AU’s silence on the matter, BRGIE remains adamant, declaring that Biafra will continue to advocate for its independence, emphasizing that it aims to become a beacon for a new, free Africa.

The Simon Ekpa-led Biafra Republic Government In-Exile (BRGIE) has called for the removal of Nigeria’s representative at the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), Acting Secretary-General Abiola Idowu-Ojo.
