Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at a three-day Technical National Working Group Session, Fagbemi explained that with widespread adoption of the Act, offenders would no longer be able to evade justice by moving from one state to another, a practice commonly referred to as “forum shopping.”

Fagbemi emphasized the significance of embracing technology in the administration of justice to effectively combat crime. He stated, “The need to incorporate efficient use of technology into processes, systems, and procedures for the advancement of criminal justice cannot be overemphasized.”

The AGF highlighted that the ACJA, enacted in 2015, was designed to harmonize criminal justice reforms across the federation, promoting the efficient management of criminal justice institutions, speedy dispensation of justice, and protection of the rights of suspects, defendants, and victims. He noted that with the uniform application of the Act by states, criminals will face a unified system of justice, contributing to Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

“The adoption of the Act by states also ensures that offenders cannot move from state to state with a view to escaping justice,” Fagbemi reiterated. “With improved and uniform implementation of criminal justice reforms across the country, there will be no escape route for criminals.”

The AGF also discussed the development of the National Minimum Standards as a tool to streamline the implementation of the ACJA, ensuring that courts at both the federal and state levels apply similar standards in criminal procedures and enforcement.

Fagbemi noted that the National Working Group on Criminal Justice Reforms, which consists of stakeholders from various sectors including federal and state agencies, civil society organizations, and legal practitioners, was established to foster cooperation in the implementation of the Act. He expressed optimism that the group’s work would lead to the successful realization of uniform criminal justice procedures across the country.

The AGF concluded by stating that the collaboration between stakeholders under the National Working Group represents a significant step toward consolidating the reforms brought about by the ACJA and ensuring justice is served effectively nationwide.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has asserted that the full domestication of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) by states will curtail the escape of interstate criminals in Nigeria.
