The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) placed several communities, including Kubwa and Lugbe, in Band A, which costs N209.5/kilowatt hour (KWh), leading to widespread complaints.

In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), residents lamented that the tariff increase was unjustified, as they barely receive half the expected power supply. Band A customers are supposed to enjoy at least 20 hours of electricity daily, but many in these areas report receiving far less, with some getting as little as 9 hours.

Mrs. Eniola Williams, a civil servant living in Kubwa, shared her frustration after noticing a sharp reduction in the number of units she received for her N5,000 recharge. “I was shocked to get only 22.2 units for N5,000. In Kubwa, we barely get 9 hours of electricity a day. It’s unfair to be charged for Band A when the service doesn’t match,” she said, urging AEDC to correct the situation.

Similarly, Mr. Moses Okoro, another Kubwa resident, recounted a similar experience after buying N2,000 worth of electricity and receiving just 8.2 units. “AEDC is collecting money for services they are not delivering. Why should we pay for Band A when we barely get enough power? It feels like we’re being exploited,” he said, adding that AEDC should reevaluate the arbitrary billing practices.

In Lugbe, Mr. Ernest Osagie described how he recharged N10,000 and received only 44.4 units, while his neighbors, connected to the same transformer, still pay at the old tariff rate. “This inconsistency is alarming. How can people on the same transformer be charged differently for the same service? AEDC needs to address this selective migration to Band A,” Osagie said.

Mrs. Bola Akinwale, also in Lugbe, echoed the sentiment, revealing that she got only 8.2 units for her N2,000 recharge while her neighbors continued to receive the old tariff rate. “It’s confusing and unfair. How is the Band A migration decided? AEDC must fix these discrepancies and ensure fairness.”

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have expressed frustration over their transfer to the more expensive Band A electricity tariff, despite not receiving the promised minimum of 20 hours of power supply daily.
