Abdulkareem, alleging sexual harassment. The discharge comes months after Ogunleye publicly aired her grievances via her TikTok account, @Ogunleyeruthsavage1, in January 2024.

Ogunleye had accused Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem, Colonel G.S. Ogor, and Brigadier General I.B. Solebo of making her life unbearable. Specifically, she alleged that Colonel Abdulkareem attempted to assault her, administered injections without her consent, forcibly removed her from her residence, and detained her in a psychiatric facility for several months after she rejected his sexual advances.

Following the viral social media post, the Nigerian Army initiated a formal investigation. The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, directed a comprehensive inquiry to examine the merits of Ogunleye’s claims.

In a press briefing in Abuja, Director of Army Public Relations Major General Onyema Nwachukwu disclosed the results of the investigation. According to him, a thorough review of the facts, testimonies, and evidence found no basis for the accusations against Colonel Abdulkareem.

“Upon receiving her complaint, the Nigerian Army immediately referred the matter to the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police. Their investigation followed strict protocols to ensure fairness and impartiality,” Nwachukwu explained. “It is essential to note that the investigation’s findings were based on a thorough evaluation of all available information, concluding that Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem did not commit the offences alleged by ex-Private Ruth Ogunleye.”

He emphasized that the Nigerian Army conducted an exhaustive review, aiming for transparency and justice at every stage of the process.

Beyond the allegations, further complications regarding Ogunleye’s discharge emerged. Major General Nwachukwu revealed that Ogunleye had been recommended for discharge on medical grounds as early as 2022. “The Army showed compassion and ensured she received the best medical treatment available before officially discharging her,” he added. Ogunleye had undergone extensive treatment, including a psychiatric evaluation at the National Hospital in Abuja, which indicated that she was suffering from mental health challenges that rendered her medically vulnerable.

Ogunleye’s online behaviour raised concerns about her emotional and mental well-being, according to Army officials. The investigation not only focused on her allegations but also examined her mental health, leading to a broader understanding of her condition.

The Nigerian Army has discharged Private Ruth Ogunleye following accusations she made against senior officers, including Colonel I.B.
