On Tuesday, Israel launched dozens of additional air raids on Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon, a day after 492 people, including 35 children, were killed in the bloodiest shelling since a catastrophic war in 2006.<\/p>\n
Israel’s midnight raids on southern Lebanon occurred after it claimed to have killed a “large number” of militants when it struck over 1,600 alleged Hezbollah targets throughout the nation.<\/p>\n
Hezbollah announced Tuesday that it had launched missiles targeting Israeli military bases, hours after 180 of its projectiles and an unmanned aerial vehicle entered Israeli airspace, sending residents of Haifa fleeing for safety.<\/p>\n
The Israeli military reported that more than 50 rockets were shot into northern Israel in less than 10 minutes on Tuesday morning, the majority of which were intercepted.<\/p>\n
In Lebanon, Monday’s raids killed 492 people, including 35 children and 58 women, and injured 1,645, according to the health ministry, which stated that “thousands of families” had fled.<\/p>\n
“Everyone is heading (to Lebanon’s capital Beirut) with their children and belongings\u2014it’s the first time we see such panic since 2006,” said Lebanese journalist Nazir Reda, who was driving to his hometown near the Israeli border to bring his family away from the bloodshed.<\/p>\n
Longtime enemies Hezbollah and Israel have been involved in near-daily cross-border exchanges of fire for nearly a year, since the Palestinian militant organization<\/p>\n
Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7.<\/p>\n
Hezbollah, which has been fighting Israel for decades, and other Iranian-backed terrorists in the region have been drawn into the conflict.<\/p>\n
Monday’s bombardment of Lebanon was by far the greatest, not just in the last year, but since the Israel-Hezbollah conflict in the summer of 2006.<\/p>\n
That conflict killed 1,200 people in Lebanon, largely civilians, and 160 Israelis, the majority of whom were military, and destroyed substantial swaths of Hezbollah’s strongholds.<\/p>\n
\u2013 \u2018Operation Northern Arrows\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n
Israel dubbed its large-scale airstrikes on Hezbollah “Operation Northern Arrows” after announcing earlier this month that it would divert its firepower from Gaza to Lebanon.<\/p>\n
World leaders have expressed concern about the quick escalation in Lebanon, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesman saying he was “gravely alarmed” and the EU’s top diplomat Josep Borrell warning “we are almost in a full-fledged war”.<\/p>\n
France and Egypt urged the United Nations Security Council to intervene, while Iraq requested an emergency conference of Arab governments on the fringes of the UN General Assembly in New York.<\/p>\n
The Pentagon said it was sending a modest number of more US military personnel to the Middle East after hundreds were already sent, along with warships, fighter planes, and air defense equipment.<\/p>\n
A US official, speaking on the condition of anonymity at the assembly, stated that Washington opposes an Israeli ground assault targeting Hezbollah and has “concrete ideas” for de-escalating the conflict.<\/p>\n
G7 foreign ministers said in a joint statement that \u201cno country stands to gain\u201d from escalating conflict, warning of \u201cunimaginable consequences\u201d if a regional war broke out.<\/p>\n
\u2013 \u2018Most difficult week for Hezbollah\u2019 \u2013<\/p>\n
Israeli army chief Herzi Halevi said Monday’s attacks struck combat facilities Hezbollah had been building for two decades, while Defense Minister Yoav Gallant dubbed Monday “a significant peak” in the operation.<\/p>\n
“This is the most difficult week for Hezbollah since its establishment — the results speak for themselves,” the leader remarked.<\/p>\n
“Entire units were taken out of battle as a result of the activities conducted at the beginning of the week in which numerous terrorists were injured.”<\/p>\n
