The approval was announced by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

This housing project forms a key component of the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to address pressing national issues, including improving living conditions for essential public servants such as members of the judiciary. The construction of these residences is expected to alleviate longstanding concerns over the lack of secure and convenient accommodation for judges, allowing them to focus on their duties without unnecessary distractions.

Minister Wike provided further details on the initiative, stating that the houses will be built in the Kantampe District, a well-planned area within Abuja. The allocation will be split across various levels of the judiciary, with 20 homes reserved for the FCT High Court, 10 for the Federal High Court, and 10 for the Court of Appeal. The project is expected to be completed within 15 months, a timeline set to ensure judges and justices can move into the new residences without delay.

“The President has emphasized the importance of this project, as it is unacceptable for judges and justices to live in rented houses or hotels. This situation not only poses security risks but also hampers their ability to carry out their duties effectively. In response, the President has directed the FCT administration, through the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), to construct these 40 residential units for our judges,” Wike explained.

In addition to the housing units, Wike highlighted the government’s broader infrastructure plan that includes significant road construction to improve access to the judicial quarters. The FEC has approved the construction of several key access roads, including an access road from Artillery Road N11, connecting Mabuchi to the judges’ quarters, and the development of all internal roads within the housing complex itself. Further, an access road from Ring Road 1-N16 Shehu Shagari Way to the judges’ quarters will be built, as well as road developments linking the Court of Appeal in Abuja to the rest of the city.

The approval of this housing and infrastructure development is part of a larger push by the Tinubu administration to enhance the capital city’s infrastructure, not just within the judiciary but across various sectors. Minister Wike also announced that over 75 kilometers of roads would be constructed in satellite towns within the FCT, covering Kwali, Gwagwalada, and Bwari area councils. These road developments aim to improve connectivity and accessibility for residents, especially those in less developed parts of the capital.

This move has been welcomed by legal practitioners and judicial officers alike, many of whom have long voiced concerns over the inadequate housing conditions provided to judges, which in some cases have led to security breaches and discomfort. The construction of these homes is expected to provide much-needed relief, ensuring that judges and justices can perform their roles in an environment conducive to their work.

The Federal Government has given the green light for the construction of 40 housing units for judges in Abuja as part of its commitment to enhancing the welfare and security of the judiciary.
