Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has announced that his administration cannot sustain the ongoing distribution of palliatives to poor and vulnerable households across the state’s 31 local government areas. The governor expressed concerns about the plight of heavily impacted families but noted that food handouts are an expensive and unrealistic solution to address poverty in the long term.<\/p>\n
Instead, Governor Eno is advocating for a holistic approach that encourages aggressive farming, with the government providing support in farm inputs like fertilizers, improved seedlings, and other facilities. This directive is part of the state’s efforts to address the prevailing poverty and ensure transparency and accountability in intervention programs.<\/p>\n
The state’s Bulk Purchase Agency (BPA) has been directed to ensure seamless implementation of the palliative scheme, using a voucher system to reach the targeted impoverished population. The agency’s executive chairman, Dr. Daniel Akpan, assured beneficiaries in Okobo LGA that the distribution would be fair and transparent, with 5,000 bags of beans, rice, and garri being shared according to wards.<\/p>\n
