This remarkable milestone was announced by John Zhao, an official of the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC), the contractor responsible for building and operating the rail system. Zhao shared this update via his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday.

According to Zhao, the rail system, which consists of two lines, has been running safely and efficiently since its launch. Covering a total distance of 45 kilometers and featuring 12 stations, the trains can reach a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour. The rail line is designed to serve key areas of the capital, connecting the bustling city center, the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, and the rapidly growing Kubwa satellite town.

“The Phase 1 of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit by #CCECC has been operating safely for over 100 days! Consisting of 2 lines with a total length of 45 km and 12 stations, the maximum operating speed of the trains can reach 100km/h. During its operation, over 250,000 passengers have already been served, significantly reducing traffic congestion in the capital. Take a look,” Zhao’s post read.

Often referred to as the Abuja Metro Rail, the service began commercial operations on May 29, 2024, following an official commissioning by President Bola Tinubu. The rail system is seen as a crucial step toward reducing the overwhelming road traffic in Abuja, where congestion has long been a challenge for residents and visitors alike.

One of the key achievements of the metro rail is its ability to relieve pressure on the roads, especially during peak hours. With its rapid, efficient service between the city center, airport, and suburban areas, the rail has become an essential mode of transport for many commuters. The convenience and speed of the system have been praised, with commuters experiencing quicker travel times and a more pleasant commuting experience.

In an effort to further encourage the use of the metro rail, President Tinubu recently approved the extension of free train rides for the next six months, running until the end of 2024. This follows an earlier announcement by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, who had initially granted commuters two months of free rides on the newly launched rail service.

The free rides initiative, which has been widely appreciated by commuters, is expected to boost ridership and help more residents become accustomed to using the rail system as a reliable and cost-effective transportation option. By extending the offer through December, the government aims to reinforce public trust in the efficiency and safety of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit.

The first phase of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit has transported more than 250,000 passengers in just over 100 days since it commenced commercial operations.
