The Kogi State government has secured approval from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to regulate its electricity market, becoming the seventh state to achieve this milestone. This development follows Kogi’s compliance with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electricity Act 2023.<\/p>\n
As a result, NERC has transferred regulatory oversight to the Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC), allowing the state to regulate its intrastate electricity market. However, NERC retains its authority over interstate and international electricity operations.<\/p>\n
To facilitate a smooth transition, NERC has directed the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to establish a subsidiary, AEDC SubCo, responsible for intrastate supply and distribution in Kogi. This subsidiary must be incorporated within 60 days and obtain a license from KSERC. All regulatory transfers are expected to be completed by March 12, 2025.<\/p>\n
Kogi joins other states like Imo, Enugu, Ekiti, Ondo, Oyo, and Edo, which have already secured NERC’s approval to regulate their electricity markets. These states have successfully established their own electricity regulatory commissions, enabling them to set prices and regulate local electricity operations independently.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, 12 other states have applied to create their own regulatory bodies under the Electricity Act 2023, but only a few have completed the necessary steps to become operational.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
