The NGSA’s Director-General, Professor Olusegun Ige, addressed concerns on Wednesday, emphasizing that the tremors are minor and pose no significant threat to the environment or public safety.

According to a statement released by the NGSA, the agency has been closely monitoring the recent seismic activity and has determined that the tremors are low in intensity. The agency reported that between Friday, September 13th, and Monday, September 16th, a total of approximately 48 separate earthquake events were recorded. These events showed a rise in both intensity and frequency over this period.

The statement detailed that the NGSA Monitoring Station at Katampe detected several significant ground motions in the past five days, starting from September 13, 2024. On September 13th, only one mild tremor was recorded. The following day, six tremors were registered, with the frequency increasing to over 21 events on September 15th. The most recent records on September 16th included more than twenty tremors. The intensity and frequency of these events have shown a progressive increase over the observed period.

The NGSA also noted that the current day, September 17th, has seen a few weaker tremors. Preliminary analysis of seismic waveforms indicates that the sources of these ground motions are located less than 5 kilometers from the monitoring station. In response to these events, the NGSA team conducted on-site assessments in the affected areas to gather additional data.

Professor Ige explained that the tremors result from accumulated stress along identified geological faults and the subsequent release of seismic energy, which may have traveled through associated fractures to areas where the tremors were felt. He noted that the epicenters of the recent tremors are primarily located northeast of the NGSA-5 Seismic Station, around the Mpape area, with a few located southwest near Katampe.

The intensity of the tremors, measured on the Modified Mercalli Scale, ranges from III to IV, indicating weak to light tremors. This level of intensity is deemed to pose a very low-level threat to residents and infrastructure.

In light of these findings, the NGSA reassures residents in Mpape, Katampe, Maitama, and other areas affected by the tremors that there is no cause for alarm. The agency advises the public to remain calm as the tremors are generally considered low in severity.

The NGSA continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary to ensure public awareness and safety.

The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has sought to reassure residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following a series of recent earth tremors, urging the public to remain calm.
