This move is part of a broader initiative to transition Nigeria’s transportation sector away from gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, revealed that the initiative has already delivered 50 kits to 18 centers in five of the eight states where the project has been rolled out. This marks a significant step in the federal government’s commitment to reducing the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels and encouraging the adoption of CNG as an alternative fuel source.

According to Oluwagbemi, the Presidential CNG Initiative is focused on scaling up the program to reach more vehicles across the country. “We have started the distribution of conversion kits in various centers, and with this additional batch, we are looking to cover even more ground,” he said. Each of the 18 centers that received 50 kits will be provided with an extra 200 conversion kits in the coming weeks to ensure the program’s sustainability and broader reach.

During a visit to several of the conversion centers in Abuja that are implementing the program, Oluwagbemi highlighted the significance of the free conversions for Nigerian motorists. “The cost of fuel is rising, and the environmental impact of gasoline and diesel is undeniable. By offering these conversions free of charge, we’re providing Nigerians with an alternative that is not only more economical but also environmentally friendly,” he explained.

The initiative, which is part of the federal government’s broader strategy to diversify the country’s energy sources, has been welcomed by stakeholders and environmental advocates. The CNG conversion kits enable vehicles currently powered by gasoline or diesel to switch to CNG, a cleaner-burning fuel that produces fewer emissions and is cheaper than traditional fuels. The government believes that widespread adoption of CNG will not only reduce Nigeria’s carbon footprint but also decrease the financial burden on Nigerians who have faced rising fuel prices in recent months.

The federal government has ramped up its efforts to promote cleaner energy alternatives by distributing an additional 1,200 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits across Abuja and five states nationwide.
