The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, have ordered an urgent investigation into the alleged six-year detention of Naval rating Seaman Abbas Haruna.<\/p>\n
The order follows claims made by Haruna’s widow, who accused military authorities of detaining her husband illegally for over six years. The accusations were brought to light during an interview on an Abuja radio station.<\/p>\n
Responding to these allegations, Minister Matawalle emphasized the importance of fairness and discipline within the military. In a statement released by his Personal Assistant on Media, Ahmad Dan-Wudil, Matawalle declared that no military official should face undue hardship or mistreatment. He stated, “Our military forces are founded on the principles of honour, discipline, and fairness. No officer serving this wonderful nation should face excessive hardship or wrong treatment. The case of Seaman Abbas will be thoroughly investigated, and the truth will be uncovered.”<\/p>\n
The minister assured the public that the investigation would be taken seriously and that justice would prevail. He also stressed that every military member, regardless of rank, deserves to be treated with respect. The statement further indicated that Seaman Abbas Haruna\u2019s rights would be safeguarded throughout the investigation and that any breaches of protocol would be swiftly addressed.<\/p>\n
Similarly, the Defence Headquarters has affirmed its commitment to upholding fairness and justice. In a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Brig Gen Tukur Gusau, the military assured the public that the investigation’s outcome would be made public. He reiterated the Armed Forces of Nigeria\u2019s dedication to the rule of law, stating, “The military court-martial process, though meticulous, ensures fairness, equal opportunity, and justice in accordance with established military procedures and the law.”<\/p>\n
