The healthcare outreach program, which targeted a wide range of health concerns, offered antenatal care, immunizations, HIV screening, and treatments for chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and sickle cell disease.

The medical outreach was inaugurated by the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, who underscored the administration’s commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery within the territory. She highlighted the significance of initiatives like these in bridging the healthcare gap for residents who struggle with limited access to medical services.

Dr. Mahmoud acknowledged the alarming maternal and child mortality rates in the country, attributing much of the problem to inadequate access to antenatal care, low rates of facility-based deliveries, and poor uptake of immunization and family planning services. She emphasized that these issues are compounded in rural and underserved areas like Bwari, where healthcare infrastructure and services are often insufficient.

“We recognize that maternal and child health remains a critical challenge in Nigeria, particularly in areas where healthcare services are not easily accessible. By bringing these essential services directly to the people, we aim to reduce the mortality rates and ensure that more women receive the care they need during pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond,” Dr. Mahmoud said.

The outreach provided a variety of free medical services, reflecting the administration’s focus on both preventive and curative healthcare. Some of the key services offered include:

Antenatal care: Ensuring that expectant mothers received proper medical attention during pregnancy.

Immunization: Delivering vaccines to prevent common childhood diseases such as polio, measles, and diphtheria.

HIV screening: Offering voluntary counseling and testing to help in early detection and treatment.

Management of chronic diseases: Providing treatments and consultations for individuals living with diabetes, hypertension, and sickle cell disease.

Dr. Mahmoud stressed the importance of maternal health in improving overall public health outcomes, noting that regular antenatal care, exclusive breastfeeding, and timely immunizations are critical in reducing infant mortality and ensuring the long-term health of both mothers and children.

To address the persistent healthcare challenges faced by rural communities, the FCTA is working to enhance the primary healthcare system in the region. Dr. Mahmoud revealed that the administration is actively upgrading existing health centers and constructing new ones across the six area councils, including Bwari. The goal is to bring quality healthcare closer to the people and ensure that basic medical services are available to all residents, regardless of their location.

“We are focused on improving healthcare infrastructure in every corner of the FCT. By upgrading and building new health centers, we aim to strengthen our primary healthcare system and ensure that residents have access to quality services at all times,” she added.

Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, the Mandate Secretary for the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, also commended the outreach initiative, noting that free medical missions have been proven to be an effective global strategy for reaching underserved populations. According to her, these missions not only address immediate health needs but also play a crucial role in public health education, helping communities understand the importance of preventive care and healthy living practices.

“Free medical missions allow us to reach those who might otherwise go without medical care, especially in remote areas. It also gives us an opportunity to educate residents about essential health practices, such as proper hygiene, the importance of vaccinations, and managing chronic conditions,” Dr. Fasawe said.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has provided free healthcare services to over 3,370 residents of the Bwari Area Council, addressing critical medical needs and ensuring access to essential health services for underserved communities.
