The torrential downpour, which lasted for several hours, left the area submerged in water, damaging homes, businesses, and vital infrastructure.

Residents of the affected community, speaking to Abuja City Journal correspondent, expressed their despair and pleaded for urgent government intervention to alleviate their losses. Many of them have been left homeless and without a means of livelihood.

Mr. Ahmed Mohamed, a local tea vendor known in the community as “Mai Sai,” shared the impact the flood has had on his life speaking to Abuja City Journal. “The flood swept away everything I use for my business, including all the bread and tea items I had just received the day before. This was my only means of survival, and now I have nothing left,” Mohamed lamented.

Mrs. Fatimo Adewole, a trader in the area, recounted her ordeal, revealing that the flood not only destroyed all her goods but also displaced her family. “All the items in my shop were carried away by the flood. My three children and I have been left homeless since the incident. We’ve been staying with a neighbor for now, but we desperately need help. I am appealing to the FCT administration to assist us with relief materials,” Adewole said, visibly emotional.

The flood has left the entire community in disarray. More than 10 homes were reported to have been destroyed, plunging Angwa Hakimi into darkness as several electric poles that supply the community with power were knocked down by the floodwaters.

Efforts to reach the village head for comments were unsuccessful as he was reportedly out of the community. However, Mr. Jude Ugochukwu, a property owner in the area, made an impassioned plea to the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) to rehabilitate the dilapidated road leading to the community, which he believes contributed to the severity of the flood damage. “This road has been in terrible condition for years, and it worsened the impact of the flood. We need the government to step in and fix the road to prevent future incidents like this,” Ugochukwu urged.

The flood has left the residents in a dire state, with many seeking shelter with neighbors and relatives as they await assistance from the government. “The most frustrating part is not knowing when or if help will come. We are trying to hold on, but the damage is overwhelming,” said another resident, who wished to remain anonymous.

The Abuja Municipal Area Council and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Emergency Management Team have yet to respond to the community’s urgent appeals for help. In the meantime, residents are bracing for more rains, with fears that additional flooding could further devastate the already battered community.

The destruction of critical infrastructure like electric poles and roads has left Angwa Hakimi isolated from essential services. The loss of electricity has compounded the difficulties for residents, with many households struggling to cope without power for days.

A devastating flood has wreaked havoc in Angwa Hakimi, Orozo, a suburb of Abuja, destroying properties worth millions of naira after heavy rains swept through the community on Monday night.
