The devastating decision led to the infant’s untimely death.

On the morning of December 20, 2022, Auta, who was living in nurses’ accommodation at the Royal Bolton Hospital, left her son alone in the flat shortly after 6:30 AM to begin her shift. She did not return for over eight hours. Upon arriving home at 3:13 PM, she found baby Joshua unresponsive and immediately called emergency services at 3:24 PM, reporting that her baby was not breathing. Despite medical efforts to revive him, Joshua was pronounced dead at 4:40 PM.

At an earlier court hearing, Auta pled guilty to child cruelty charges. Following her guilty plea, she attempted to flee the country, but was arrested at Gatwick Airport on June 6, 2023, as she tried to board a one-way flight to Nigeria. She was later sentenced to three years in prison by Bolton Crown Court, according to a report by the BBC.

During the sentencing, Sara Davie, District Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, condemned Auta’s actions, pointing out the tragic irony that while she went to work to care for others, she abandoned her own child, who needed her care the most. “As a nurse, Ruth Auta should have been acutely aware of the risks of leaving an infant unattended. Her decision that day was not just irresponsible but had devastating consequences,” Davie said.

Auta’s attempt to flee the country and her lack of remorse during the investigation were highlighted in court. Prosecutors revealed that she lied to the police, initially claiming she had picked Joshua up from a childminder after her shift and had fallen asleep next to him. She told officers that when she woke, she found him unresponsive. However, CCTV footage captured her leaving her flat at 6:47 AM without her baby and returning alone at 3:13 PM. Investigators also uncovered incriminating messages on Auta’s phone, in which she asked the childminder to lie to the police and say she had cared for Joshua on the day of his death. The childminder, however, told the truth, stating she hadn’t seen the baby for several days.

The court also heard details about the possible cause of Joshua’s death. While no conclusive cause was determined, it was suggested that the baby may have overheated due to being wrapped in layers of clothing and bedding. Other potential causes, however, could not be ruled out.

In her statement, Sara Davie expressed her sympathies for those affected by Joshua’s death, saying, “Our thoughts and condolences go out to all those impacted by this senseless tragedy.”

Ruth Auta’s case has drawn widespread condemnation, not just for her actions but for her apparent lack of remorse. Many have questioned how a nurse, entrusted with the care of others, could make such a reckless decision regarding her own child’s welfare. The case also shines a light on broader issues of childcare responsibilities for working parents, particularly in high-pressure professions like nursing.

Auta’s attempt to evade justice by fleeing the country further compounded the tragedy, highlighting her refusal to take responsibility for the consequences of her actions. As she begins her sentence, she will have to confront the full weight of the decisions she made on that fateful day.

The sentencing marks the end of a deeply troubling chapter, but for many, the questions remain: how could a mother leave her newborn unattended for so long, and how can such tragedies be prevented in the future? As Auta serves her sentence, these are the questions that will continue to linger.

2A 28-year-old Nigerian nurse, Ruth Auta, has been sentenced to three years in prison by a United Kingdom court after she left her 10-week-old baby, Joshua Akerele, home alone while she went to work.
