This decision was made following an interactive meeting with stakeholders held at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub in Benin City on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.

The meeting, chaired by INEC, was attended by representatives from various sectors, including political party chairmen, candidates, traditional and religious leaders, security agencies, civil society organizations, and the media. Both the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, addressed participants, responding to their concerns about the election process and security arrangements.

During the session, there was a unanimous call from stakeholders for INEC to extend the PVC collection period. They argued that more time was needed for eligible voters who had not yet collected their cards to do so, ensuring maximum voter participation in the upcoming election.

In response to these appeals, INEC, in a statement signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner & Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, granted a three-day extension for PVC collection. The new dates for collection are Friday, September 13 to Sunday, September 15, 2024. Voters can collect their cards from INEC’s 18 local government offices across Edo State between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily.

INEC emphasized that this would be the final extension for PVC collection ahead of the election. The Commission also reiterated its strict policy that PVC collection must be done in person, as collection by proxy is not permitted.

As the election approaches, INEC continues to urge all registered voters in Edo State who have yet to collect their PVCs to take advantage of this extended period. Ensuring voters are equipped with their PVCs is vital to the credibility of the election and the overall democratic process.

The Commission also reassured the public of its readiness to conduct a free, fair, and transparent election, with adequate security measures in place to ensure a peaceful process. The involvement of various stakeholders in addressing electoral and security concerns is seen as a proactive step to ensure that the election is smooth and well-coordinated.

In preparation for the Edo State governorship election scheduled for next week, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an extension of the collection period for Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) by three days.
