The announcement came via the company’s Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs, Cornel Osigwe, who confirmed in a Facebook post that the vehicle was manufactured at the company’s production plant in Nnewi, Anambra State.

“I just test drove the first Innoson electric vehicle produced in Nnewi. We are just starting,” Osigwe stated, marking a milestone for Nigeria’s automotive industry. However, details such as pricing, the number of units produced, and the timeline for commercial release were not disclosed.

The launch of Innoson’s electric vehicle is a significant development in Nigeria’s push toward cleaner energy solutions, particularly as the global automotive industry pivots to decarbonize road transport. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), road transport accounts for more than 15% of global energy-related emissions, and EVs are a key technology for reducing these emissions.

While electric vehicles have gained traction worldwide—18% of new car sales in 2023 were electric—the adoption in developing countries like Nigeria has been slower due to higher upfront costs and a limited charging infrastructure. Nevertheless, the rising petrol prices following the deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector may provide an incentive for investors in Nigeria’s EV sector if the cost of charging remains competitive with traditional fuel prices.

Innoson is not the first to venture into Nigeria’s EV space. In 2021, Stallion Motors introduced the country’s first locally assembled EV, the Hyundai Kona. The Hyundai EV debut came as part of a broader effort by the National Automotive Industry Design and Development Council (NADDC), which launched a pilot program to establish 100 solar-powered electric vehicle charging stations nationwide.

Despite these advancements, Nigeria continues to face significant energy challenges. With only 5,000 megawatts of electricity generation against a demand of 40 terawatts, the country struggles to meet its energy needs. The World Economic Forum reports that only 25% of rural populations in Nigeria have access to electricity, with many still relying on biomass for energy. Additionally, Nigerians contend with one of the highest electricity costs globally, averaging $0.52 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), forcing many to depend on generators for 40% of their electricity requirements.

Innoson’s foray into electric vehicles, while promising, faces hurdles due to these systemic challenges, though it also presents opportunities as the nation explores alternative energy solutions to fuel its growing EV market.

By Emmanuel Ogbodo Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company (IVM) has officially unveiled its first locally produced electric vehicle (EV).
