{"id":47982,"date":"2024-09-10T12:20:47","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T12:20:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=47982"},"modified":"2024-09-10T12:20:47","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T12:20:47","slug":"australian-pm-proposes-social-media-ban-for-minors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/09\/10\/australian-pm-proposes-social-media-ban-for-minors\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian PM Proposes Social Media Ban for Minors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has announced a plan to ban children from using social media.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the prime minister said the government would introduce legislation in 2024 to enforce a minimum age for access to social media and other relevant digital platforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know social media is causing social harm, and it is taking kids away from real friends and real experiences,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>He said the legislation would be informed by engagement with the states and territories, but his preference is to set the minimum age at 16 years.<\/p>\n<p>According to a poll by state broadcaster the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in August, 61 per cent of Australians supported restricting social media access to those younger than 17.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Peter Malinauskas, the premier of South Australia, commissioned former federal judge Robert French to explore legal pathways to ban children younger than 14 from social media.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister said the federal government would consider Robert French\u2019s review when drafting the legislation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has announced a plan to ban children from using social media.
