{"id":47931,"date":"2024-09-10T10:31:29","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T10:31:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=47931"},"modified":"2024-09-10T10:31:29","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T10:31:29","slug":"stray-elephant-invade-borno-communities-destroy-farmlands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/09\/10\/stray-elephant-invade-borno-communities-destroy-farmlands\/","title":{"rendered":"Stray Elephant Invade Borno Communities, Destroy Farmlands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Forestry and Wildlife in Borno Ministry of Environment says a herd of elephants that allegedly strayed from neighbouring Cameroon has invaded and destroyed some community farmlands in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ayuba Peter, a director in the ministry, confirmed the ugly incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>He said the last survey made by the government regarding the presence of elephants in the forest showed that there was none.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe conducted a survey before the Boko Haram insurgency and found that its population has been depleted by activities of poachers. We used to have a herd of elephants in Sambisa forest, but due to poaching and other habitat destruction, we have lost them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we started having reports of their incursions from a neighbouring Cameroon forest into Borno, through Gamboru\/Ngala and Kala-Balge axis, we were excited.
