Industry stakeholders have expressed concerns over the increasing difficulty in attracting additional funding, as the volatile exchange rate continues to undermine returns on investments.

This issue is compounded by the reluctance of Nigerian banks to invest in the long-term nature of data centre businesses, pushing operators to rely on foreign investors. Nigerian banks, typically seeking quicker returns, are less inclined to support such ventures, which require extended timeframes to become profitable.

One of the biggest challenges for operators is the instability of the Nigerian currency. Power supply and infrastructure issues remain problematic, but the fluctuating exchange rate has become the most pressing concern. Engr. Ikechukwu Nnamani, CEO of Digital Reality Nigeria, explained that around 90% of the investment required for a new data centre is in foreign currency, as most equipment cannot be sourced locally.

Nnamani highlighted how the forex crisis is deterring foreign investments: “If you set pricing based on an exchange rate of N1500/$1, and the naira depreciates to N2000/$1, the dollar value of your service drops significantly, even though the original investment assumptions were correct. The devaluation of the naira undermines the entire business model.”

Nnamani added that even operators relying on local investments are now at risk, and some may already be facing serious financial challenges.

MDXi, a Nigerian data centre business under Equinix, echoed these concerns, citing rising costs due to the naira’s instability. According to MainOne’s Managing Director, operational expenses have soared, with higher costs for diesel, equipment maintenance, and service contracts with third-party vendors.

To remain viable, Nnamani suggests that data centre operators in Nigeria must benchmark their prices to the naira’s fluctuations. However, he emphasised that long-term foreign funding remains the only sustainable option. He explained, “The only way this market can survive is through long-term funding, where investors can wait five to ten years for returns. Nigerian banks seeking quick payback within two years will not work in this context.”

Without addressing the currency instability and securing patient capital, the future of Nigeria’s data centre investments remains uncertain.

By Emmanuel Ogbodo Data centre operators in Nigeria are facing significant challenges due to the ongoing forex crisis, which is now threatening millions of dollars already invested in these facilities.
