Huawei’s upcoming tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT, has garnered over 2.8 million reservations on the company\u2019s website in China. Preorders opened on Saturday, with the official launch scheduled for Tuesday, September 10th, at 2:30 pm local time. The Mate XT will be available in black and red and is expected to hit the market on September 20th. Detailed specifications, pricing, and other features will be unveiled during the launch event.<\/p>\n
Huawei has previously released foldable phones like the book-style Mate X5 and the clamshell Pocket P50. According to research firm TechInsights, foldable phone shipments grew by 85% in the second quarter year-over-year. Despite U.S. sanctions that once hindered access to advanced chips, Huawei has made a strong comeback in China. The company initially relied on modified Snapdragon chips that lacked 5G capabilities for models like the P50, Mate 50, and P60. However, last year, Huawei surprised the market with its P60 series, powered by its in-house 7nm Kirin 9000s chip, which supports 5G\u2014the first of its kind since 2020\u2019s Mate 40.<\/p>\n
While the new Kirin chips are still two generations behind the cutting-edge 3nm processors from TSMC and Samsung, Huawei sees the ability to produce its own 5G chips as a major victory. There are even rumors of a new 5nm chip in development, although it\u2019s unclear which processor will power the Mate XT.<\/p>\n
Despite the technological gap, Huawei’s last two flagship models, the Mate 60 series and Pura 70, delivered strong design and features. Now, Huawei is set to introduce the world\u2019s first commercially available tri-fold smartphone, which will expand to a 10-inch tablet-sized display.
