Dr. Raj made this appeal while speaking at a workshop organized by the Association of Students of English and Literary Studies on fostering entrepreneurial values among students.

During his address, Dr. Raj emphasized the need for curricula across all disciplines to incorporate practical skills development, noting that such an approach could create job opportunities for graduates and significantly reduce the high rate of youth unemployment in Nigeria. “Our students need more than theoretical knowledge. We must equip them with the practical skills and entrepreneurial mindset required to navigate today’s competitive job market,” he stated.

He highlighted that job creation through entrepreneurship could address the problem of idleness among young people, which often leads to social challenges like crime and poverty. “When students are empowered with the right skills, they can create their own businesses, contribute to the economy, and become less reliant on government jobs,” Dr. Raj added.

Also speaking at the event, Dr. Vincent Paul from the Department of Entrepreneurship Studies reinforced the importance of students broadening their skill sets beyond their academic disciplines. He urged students to take advantage of modern tools, particularly in information and communication technology (ICT), to increase their economic potential and employability. “In today’s digital age, ICT offers countless opportunities. Our students must learn to use technology to their advantage, whether by starting businesses online or by improving their employability in the global workforce,” Dr. Paul remarked.

Dr. Raj also pointed out that the traditional approach to education in Nigeria, which focuses primarily on academics without addressing real-world applications, needs to be overhauled. He suggested that integrating entrepreneurship into the curriculum would better prepare students for the demands of the evolving job market and equip them with the skills to adapt to various economic changes.

The workshop aimed to inspire students to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset, urging them to think beyond just acquiring certificates and instead focus on acquiring practical, hands-on experience. The event featured several speakers from different fields who shared insights on the importance of entrepreneurial thinking and skills acquisition for succeeding in the modern economy.

A senior lecturer at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Dr. Salisu Raj, has called on the federal government to prioritize skills and entrepreneurship-driven curricula in Nigerian educational institutions to empower students and promote self-reliance.
