Telegram, currently facing increased scrutiny from the EU, has made changes to its platform. Founder Pavel Durov, who has pledged to address abuse, has now updated Telegram\u2019s policies to allow users to report illegal content in private and group chats.<\/p>\n
CoinDesk discovered that Telegram quietly modified its FAQ section, removing the previous statement that it doesn’t moderate private or group chats. Now, the section titled “There’s illegal content on Telegram. How do I take it down” indicates that all Telegram apps have a ‘Report’ button, enabling users to flag illegal content for moderation. On Android, users can tap the message to access the Report option, while iOS users need to press and hold the message. Users can also email Telegram\u2019s anti-abuse team at abuse@telegram.org to report content by providing relevant links.<\/p>\n
This update follows the recent arrest of Durov in France as part of an investigation into the lack of moderation on Telegram. Though he was released, he faces charges related to the distribution of illegal content on the app and alleged non-cooperation with authorities.<\/p>\n
Durov defended Telegram\u2019s stance on privacy, citing the platform’s refusal to hand over encryption keys to Russian authorities, which led to the app\u2019s ban in Russia. He also noted that Telegram removes millions of harmful posts and channels daily and is working to further prevent criminal abuse of its services.<\/p>\n
The app is also under EU investigation for potentially misrepresenting its user numbers to avoid compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA), and it could face fines if found in violation.<\/p>\n
While Telegram\u2019s new reporting feature is a positive step towards curbing criminal activity, ongoing efforts will be needed as bad actors often find ways to exploit online platforms.
