The agreement was signed this week in Beijing, China, as both companies cemented their commitment to advancing Nigeria’s power infrastructure.

The signing ceremony was attended by key officials, with NNPC Ltd.’s Executive Vice President, Gas Power & New Energy, Mr. Olalekan Ogunleye, and the Chairman of CMEC Nigeria, Mr. Zhang Daguang, representing their respective organizations. This partnership marks a pivotal moment for the country’s efforts to expand its power generation capacity and reduce its dependence on traditional power sources.

The 350-megawatt Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant, also referred to as the Abuja IPP, is a major component of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline Project. The GIPP project aligns with Nigeria’s Gas Master Plan, an ambitious infrastructure blueprint designed to harness the nation’s vast gas resources for power generation and industrial development.

Once completed, the GIPP Phase 1 Project will contribute significantly to Nigeria’s power grid, generating 350MW of electricity to support growing energy demands. The project is anticipated to reduce Nigeria’s persistent power shortages, which have long hindered economic growth, and offer a reliable power supply to homes, industries, and businesses in the region.

Beyond addressing the energy deficit, the GIPP project will bring about multiple economic and environmental benefits. The power plant is expected to create thousands of jobs during the construction phase and provide sustainable employment opportunities once operational. Additionally, the GIPP will contribute to Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to reduce gas flaring, a practice that has had detrimental effects on the environment and public health.

Mr. Ogunleye, speaking on behalf of NNPC, emphasized the strategic importance of the GIPP project. “This initiative is a testament to NNPC’s commitment to utilizing Nigeria’s abundant gas resources to power the economy, drive industrial growth, and improve the lives of Nigerians. The Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant will serve as a cornerstone for achieving our goals of energy security and economic development,” he said.

For CMEC, this collaboration presents an opportunity to further strengthen its presence in Nigeria’s energy sector. Mr. Zhang Daguang, Chairman of CMEC Nigeria, highlighted the importance of the MoU as a step towards deepening China-Nigeria cooperation in critical infrastructure projects. “CMEC is proud to partner with NNPC on this transformative project, which will not only enhance Nigeria’s power generation but also contribute to the long-term industrial development of the country,” Zhang noted.

Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and China Engineering & Machinery Corporation (CMEC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the co-funding of the Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant (GIPP) Phase 1 Project.
