{"id":47304,"date":"2024-09-05T14:40:29","date_gmt":"2024-09-05T14:40:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=47304"},"modified":"2024-09-05T14:52:46","modified_gmt":"2024-09-05T14:52:46","slug":"court-bars-kansiec-from-charging-exorbitant-nomination-fees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/09\/05\/court-bars-kansiec-from-charging-exorbitant-nomination-fees\/","title":{"rendered":"Court Bars KANSIEC From Charging Exorbitant Nomination Fees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted an interim injunction restraining the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from collecting nomination fees of N10 million for chairmanship aspirants and N5 million for councillorship candidates.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Emeka Nwite&#8217;s ruling followed a motion ex-parte filed by Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Democratic Party (ADP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP).<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs argued that the high fees violate democratic rights and are unfair.<\/p>\n<p>The court order states that KANSIEC is restrained from imposing and collecting these fees pending the hearing and determination of the Originating Summons.<\/p>\n<p>This ruling responds to KANSIEC Chairman Professor Sani Lawan Malumfashi&#8217;s August 15 announcement requiring aspirants to pay non-refundable fees.<\/p>\n<p>The court&#8217;s decision halts implementation of these fees until the full hearing on September 25, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>KANSIEC has yet to comment on the impact of this order on the local government elections scheduled for October 26, 2024.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted an interim injunction restraining the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from collecting nomination fees of N10 million for chairmanship aspirants and N5 million for councillorship candidates.
