It also did not give details on price or production volume.<\/p>\n<p><em><i>\u201c<\/i><\/em><em><i>The BMW Group and the Toyota Motor Corporation are pooling their innovative strength and their technological capabilities to bring a new generation of fuel cell powertrain technology to the road<\/i><\/em>\u201d the company stated on their official website.<\/p>\n<p><em><i>\u201c<\/i><\/em><em><i>Both companies share the aspiration of advancing the hydrogen economy and have extended their collaboration to push this locally zero-emission technology to the next level<\/i><\/em><em><i>\u201d<\/i><\/em>\u00a0the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>BMW CEO Oliver Zipse said in a statement the vehicle would &#8220;highlight how technological progress is shaping the mobility of the future&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Its partnership with Toyota will allow the groups to cut costs and to develop a passenger car drive unit whose technology will also have applications for commercial vehicles, they said.<\/p>\n<p><em><i>\u201cThis is a milestone in automotive history: the first-ever series production fuel cell vehicle to be offered by a global premium manufacturer. Powered by hydrogen and driven by the spirit of our cooperation, it will underscore how technological progress is shaping future mobility,\u201d<\/i><\/em>\u00a0said\u00a0Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.<\/p>\n<p>BMW is by far the strongest proponent of hydrogen technology among German carmakers, and has been testing a hydrogen passenger vehicle, the iX5 Hydrogen, with a range of 500 km (310 miles) and an ability to refuel in three to four minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The group is developing fuel cell vehicle prototypes alongside battery ones to hedge its bets depending on which &#8220;green&#8221; technology becomes dominant.<\/p>\n<p>A fuel cell vehicle uses an electric motor like an EV but draws power from a fuel stack where hydrogen is separated by a catalyst to produce electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen-powered vehicles can refuel quickly and have a long range, but few carmakers have invested in the technology because of high costs and a limited network of fueling stations.<\/p>\n<p>BMW said it assumed hydrogen charging infrastructure would have developed significantly by 2028 to accommodate its plans.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BMW plans to launch its first-ever series production fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) in 2028, thereby offering customers an additional all-electric powertrain option with zero local emissions in a BMW\u00a0the German carmaker said on Thursday.
