Mr. Lealem B. Dinku, the Deputy Resident Representative for UNDP, disclosed the devastating toll that violent extremism has taken on Nigeria, claiming the lives of over 35,000 innocent individuals.
\nDuring the inauguration ceremony of the Countering Violent Extremism Course 3\/2023, organized for West Africa by the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre (MLAILPC) at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC) in Abuja, Mr. Dinku emphasized the severity of the situation.
\nHe stated, “Between 2009 and 2023, Nigeria has witnessed a staggering loss of at least 35,000 lives due to violent extremism. This has led to the destruction of property, public infrastructure, disruptions in socio-economic activities, the loss of livelihoods, and the mass displacement of populations.”
\nDinku expressed deep concern about the widespread impact of violent extremism on Nigeria, including its profound socio-economic implications.
\nIn response to this grave issue, UNDP and the government of Japan are forging stronger ties to combat the escalating menace of violent extremism in Nigeria. One of the strategies employed to address this challenge is the implementation of Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) capacity building courses, which form part of a series of interventions to mitigate the threat. These efforts aim to foster peace, security, and prosperity in Nigeria, where thousands of lives have already been tragically lost to violent extremism.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
