{"id":47043,"date":"2024-09-04T10:00:43","date_gmt":"2024-09-04T10:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/?p=47043"},"modified":"2024-09-04T10:00:43","modified_gmt":"2024-09-04T10:00:43","slug":"volkswagen-faces-tense-townhall-with-workers-on-possible-plant-closures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abujacityjournal.com\/livenews\/2024\/09\/04\/volkswagen-faces-tense-townhall-with-workers-on-possible-plant-closures\/","title":{"rendered":"Volkswagen Faces Tense Townhall With Workers On Possible Plant Closures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Management at German automotive giant Volkswagen\u00a0will face a tense and fearful workforce at a meeting in its headquarters on Wednesday as it proposes painful cuts, including factory closures in Germany, to hit an ambitious profit target at its namesake brand.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Financial Officer Arno Antlitz and VW brand chief Thomas Schaefer will give speeches detailing the automaker&#8217;s plans at the meeting in Wolfsburg.<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen on Monday warned that it was no longer able to rule out closing plants in its home country of Germany \u2014 a measure that was previously considered off the table and has not ever been taken in the company\u2019s record.<\/p>\n<p>The auto company also said it felt that its employment protection agreement, which has been in place since 1994 and protects the workforce in Germany until 2029, may need to end.<\/p>\n<p>Speculation about Volkswagen site closures in Osnabrueck in Lower Saxony and Dresden in Saxony mounted on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen\u2019s work council, which is comprised of staff members elected to represent employee interests within the company, and major German industrial union IG Metall have been highly critical of the plan and announced they would work against it.<\/p>\n<p>Daniela Cavallo, a leading representative of\u00a0Volkswagen\u2019s General Works Council, earlier in the week said that the group would display \u201cfierce resistance\u201d against the plans. There was an understanding in place over decades that profitability and job security were equal goals, but the company had now decided to end this deal, she said.<\/p>\n<p>The most important thing now was getting a picture of the future and knowing where the business is headed, Cavallo added.<\/p>\n<p>German media also quoted her as saying that she was expecting the townhall of Wednesday to be fully attended, and for workers to make their frustrations clear loudly on the day.<\/p>\n<p>Philippe Houchois, head of global autos\u00a0at Jefferies, told CNBC\u2019s \u201cSquawk Box Europe\u201d on Monday that Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume would try to ease the resistance against the potential plans.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBlume is a different breed from his predecessor. He\u2019s probably more of an insider and will see to what extent he is able to, to change some of the resistance to, to adapt at Volkswagen,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<p>Houchois also said that Volkswagen management and employee representatives might not be that far apart when it comes to the basics, based on their comments from recent days.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s the question of how they, they get to an agreement or the process to actually work together, but the endgame seems to be understood on both sides,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<p>The potential issues at Volkswagen come at a difficult time for both the broader German economy and for the country\u2019s auto industry specifically, as an array of challenges weigh on the sector.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the Ifo institute said that business climate in the German automotive industry pulled back again in August, falling to negative 24.7 points from the previous month\u2019s print of negative 18.5 points.
