On Monday, September 2, the Nigerian Police Force declared Andrew Wynne, a British national also known as Andrew Povich or Drew Povey, and his Nigerian associate, Lucky Ehis Obinyan, wanted for allegedly conspiring to overthrow the government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Force has launched an extensive investigation into the involvement of foreign mercenaries and what it described as subversive elements plotting against the current administration.<\/p>\n
Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made the announcement at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. He revealed that Wynne, under the guise of operating an educational and literary initiative, rented a space at Labour House, Abuja, where he established the \u2018Iva Valley Bookshop\u2019 and \u2018STARS of Nations Schools.\u2019 These establishments, according to Adejobi, served as a front for his subversive activities aimed at destabilizing the Nigerian government.<\/p>\n
Adejobi stated that documentary evidence and confessions obtained during the investigation indicate that Wynne was not only the mastermind behind the plot but also played an active role in its execution. He reportedly issued directives, monitored the progress of recent protests, and provided financial and operational support to the conspirators, all with the aim of achieving an unconstitutional regime change in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
\u201cPreliminary findings suggest they orchestrated and funded violent protests, disseminated false information, and engaged in other unlawful activities to create anarchy and justify their illegal plot to overthrow the democratically elected government,\u201d Adejobi said.<\/p>\n
This declaration by the police comes just days after the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) leadership was summoned for questioning regarding their connections to Wynne. Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, and Emma Ugboaja, the union\u2019s General Secretary, have been ordered to appear at the Force Headquarters on September 5, 2024, for further interrogation.<\/p>\n
